Email Marketing Best Practices That Move the Needle

27 June 2026 · 7 min read

Email still returns more per dollar than almost any other channel, but only when it is done with care. The difference between email that converts and email that lands in spam usually comes down to a handful of fundamentals. Here is a playbook you can apply to any campaign.

Build a list you are proud of

Growth for its own sake is a trap. Purchased or scraped lists tank your deliverability and can breach anti-spam law. Grow with intent: offer a genuine reason to subscribe, confirm the opt-in, and set expectations about what and how often you will send. A smaller, engaged list is worth far more than a big, indifferent one.

Segment so the message fits the reader

A relevant email to the right group beats a generic email to everyone. Start simple: new subscribers, active customers, and people who have gone quiet. Tailor the content and the call to action to each. Even basic segmentation lifts open and click rates and reduces unsubscribes.

Nail the fundamentals of the message

  • One goal per email. Decide the single action you want and make it the obvious next step.
  • Lead with value. Say what is in it for the reader in the first line, not the third paragraph.
  • One clear call to action.A prominent button with direct copy (“Start your free trial”) beats vague links.
  • Keep it short.Respect the reader’s time and link out for detail.

Protect your deliverability

Getting into the inbox is a marketing problem, not just a technical one. Authenticate your domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC so mailbox providers trust you. Keep your list clean by removing hard bounces and long-inactive addresses. Watch your spam-complaint rate, and avoid spammy patterns like all-image emails, misleading subjects or shouting in capitals.

Test before you send, and time it well

Preview your email across major clients, especially Classic Outlook and the Gmail app, because they render very differently. A quick test send catches broken images, dead links and layout issues that a design tool alone will not. On timing, there is no universal best hour: test send times with your own audience and let the data decide.

Measure what actually matters

Opens are a weak signal now that many clients pre-load images. Focus on clicks, conversions and revenue, plus list health metrics like unsubscribe and complaint rates. Run one clear A/B test at a time, subject line, call to action, or layout, so you know what caused a change.

Stay compliant

Marketing email is regulated. In Australia the Spam Act 2003 requires consent, accurate sender identification and a working unsubscribe; similar rules apply under CAN-SPAM in the US and GDPR and PECR in Europe. Build these in from the start, they protect your reputation and your results.

Design once, export everywhere

However you send, your email needs to render reliably. Compose it on a fixed 600px canvas, keep the markup table-based and inline-styled, then export the code and drop it into your platform of choice. That workflow keeps campaigns quick to produce and consistent in the inbox, which is the whole point of HTML Email Builder.
